Acne is a very distructive disease that leaves red pimples on the skin. It involves the sebaceous glands of the skin in which they produce a over abundance of oil for the skin.  The oll would once help the skin becomes clogged up or trapped below the skin on blocked oil ducts.  These areas of blockage form what we call pimples or whiteheads.

These whiteheads become irratated over over time and they are scratched and more and more oil builds up underneath the skin.  Scratching the whiteheads is the most damaging action.  Once the skin is irratated scar form where there was once just a bump or pimple leaving behind a red irratating crater.

Acne usually occurs during adolescents.  During this time children have elavated harmonal activity attributed from puberty.  In some cases children can grow out of having acne when their hormonial levels subside but most likely than not if not treated acne will follow a teenager into his/her adult years.

There are a number of treatments often used to remove or diminish acne scars. In my opinion the treatment of choice is non-ablative laser treatment or fractional lasers. They are generally very effective with little downtime.

Regenerating New Skin is Key
In addition, we can inject steroids into keliod scars that are raised up above the skin and make them flat, but it's very hard to make the skin that's depressed come up to a normal level. We can do that by causing regeneration in the skin.

We can try to do this by using ablative lasers like carbon dioxide lasers, but in general, although it should work, it doesn't work that well. You get a lot of inflammation from CO2, you run the risk of permanent whitening of the skin, and the results aren't that impressive like they are with wrinkles. Non-ablative lasers, on the other hand, are generally highly effective at treating acne scars.
